Scheduling Ideas Part 1

Scheduling Ideas Part 1

John Neis 2/18/13

The 2013 schedule for NDSU’s football team is not going according to plan. First Western Carolina canceled their 2013 trip to Fargo and now Gene Taylor has announced Montana State is canceling their trip. The Bobcats were scheduled to visit September 7th which was a makeup game for MSU canceling a Fargo trip in 2007. This puts the Bison back to 10 games with 5 of them being in Fargodome. This year, teams are allowed to play 12 games instead of the usual 11. Athletic Director Gene Taylor has said he wants to only schedule 11 and not the full 12 since this senior driven team has played 30 games in the last two years. But for information’s sake we are going to discuss all the options available.

UPDATES
Elon filled their 9-7 game with a 7th home game against non-counter West Virginia Wesleyan
Stetson is in transition and a win would not count towards a teams playoff win total. We will remove them and not mention other transitional teams like Charlotte, Abilene, Houston Baptist and Incarnate Word

OPTION 1 Find a Team with an Open Date and Replace Montana State with Another Game at Fargodome
This is the top choice of everyone involved in the final decision.
Teams available according to championshipsubdivision
Ranked by how many home games each team has

4 BSC: Southern Utah SWAC: Jackson St
Every NEC Team has the 2nd available but most will use it for a conference game.

Ranked by what makes the most sense
1 Northern Colorado on 9-7
Our fellow NCC conference mate and now Big Sky member has 11 games on the schedule and 7 at home. They would most likely want a home and home, because if they are just looking for a payday they could play another FBS (this statement will hold true with almost every school) They would open at home vs CSU-Pueblo @NDSU @Wyoming
2 Wofford  of the Southern Conference on 11-2
This would have to be a home and home. Wofford is located in Spartanberg, SC just southwest of Charlotte. They would play host Samford @NDSU and @Chattanooga
3 Butler on 9-7 or 9-14
The Bulldogs from Indianapolis are part of the scholarshipless Pioneer Conference. They have 6 home and 4 away games scheduled, so they have room for two more games. They do not have an FBS team scheduled but they did not play one last year. EDIT: I have been told since the Pioneer does not offer scholarships a win by an FBS team over them does not count towards wins to be bowl eligible.
4 Arkansas-PB on 11-2
SWAC teams are not known for traveling north to play, but maybe they can be persuaded. They have been near the top of the their conference for a few years and since they do not participate in the playoffs maybe they are interested in trying their team against the back-2-back national champs. They would be @Mississippi Valley @NDSU and Grambling

Then you have the schools in the same situation as NDSU with only 5 home games and wanting a 6th or a home and home contract.
We dont see NDSU willing to do a home and home with Samford, San Diego, Bucknell, Murray St, North Carolina A&T, Texas Southern, or Bryant. That leaves Georgetown, Villanova and Lehigh as teams that would make for an interesting home and home series that Bison fans could get excited for.

As for the teams with less than 5 home games you can eliminate them from the discussion. That could change as some of the conference schedules in the NEC get figured out.

Please let us know if you see any errors or have an updates from these other schools schedules. We will update with the other options this week.
